Really would appreciate some advice from someone who has been in my position?

It can sometimes be hard letting go of a job that provided a sense of security and understanding. Just don't forget the reasons why you chose to do this which one of them is being close to home...where your friends and family are no doubt. You will adapt to your new environment/situation soon enough
